Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Reyna Hoerdeman, owner of Studio Fit Chicago, located in Chicago, IL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Studio Fit Chicago- a womxn's only fitness and yoga studio. We utilize nutrition, fitness, and accountability, plus we provide a safe space & empowering atmosphere to help womxn reach their goals. My clients are busy womxn who want to build their dream life one habit at a time.
Tell us about yourself
I was teaching about 11-13 weekly fitness classes along with running my social media company. The offer to purchase my business came about, and I jumped at the chance to help more womxn as I saw the daily struggle with media and external forces. If I can help one woman become stronger daily by delivering measurable results, then I'm happy.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Getting through the pandemic...we were two years old when it hit in a very busy and expensive area of Chicago. I had to learn how to run my business an entirely different way, build a new business model, deliver high-quality classes virtually, negotiate with landlords, re-build my team and business, and it's still happening. It's good to be on the positive side of it, yet it's surely not over.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Taking all of the risks and being the one who cares about your business the most. You can never expect anyone to care about it more than you. You can hire intrapreneurs who want to work for the company just as hard yet not own it.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find someone's business model you want to emulate and a business that has scaled to where you want to be. Ask to interview them or work for them (free/internship if you have little to no experience). Shadow them, help them and ask all possible questions.
- Know your risk and have an exit strategy NO MATTER WHAT.
- Learn from others' mistakes, and don't be scared to take the leap. We learn by doing, and failure is just a lesson you need to learn to be successful.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Entrepreneurship isn't for the faint of heart. It's long hours, always being on, and you are the reason your business succeeds or fails. With that said, it can be extremely gratifying and rewarding. IF you put the time in, you will reap many rewards toward financial and personal freedom.
