Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stuart Knight, Founder of Stuart Knight Productions Inc., located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a company that produces content across many platforms with the intention of helping people "boycott what they thought" in order to create a better life and a better world.
Tell us about yourself
About thirty years ago, I began reading self-development books and was blown away by the idea that someone with an ordinary upbringing such as my own could potentially do extraordinary things with my life. At the age of 19, I was inspired to write my first motivational speech and the feedback made me want to do more of it. Just hearing one person say they will make a positive change in their life because of something you said is more than enough motivation to keep going. Especially on the days when you aren't sure if people are still listening!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
At the beginning of my speaking career, I thought it would be amazing if I could have ten thousand people hear my message. Today, I've spoken to over one million people around the world and sometimes still can't believe it.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Sacrifice. When you start your own business, if you are taking it seriously, it's like having a child. It requires your constant attention and almost all of your resources. Living in a world of instant gratification, most people can't handle sacrificing the "now" for a better future. Yes, you might not be able to go on that trip, buy those sneakers, own a house, meet your friends for drinks on the patio, or have that long-term relationship now, but if you are willing to sacrifice today, an unimaginable future is waiting for you.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- However much money, time, and energy you think you will need to start your business, triple it and get comfortable with that immediately.
- Get comfortable with risk. Taking out a ten thousand dollar loan might make you want to vomit in your mouth, but do some research on entrepreneurs who bet the bank, and you'll see it's nothing compared to the risks you will someday need to take.
- Most importantly, start anywhere because anywhere is a place, and it will lead you everywhere.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Being your own boss is an amazing experience, but it's not meant for everyone, and don't feel bad if you aren't one of those people. Too many people start businesses to look cool, be trendy, boost their social media clout, etc., but eventually, the world will discover that you are just a poser. If you have something you want to bring to the world because you genuinely think the world needs it, then do it. But if your heart isn't into it, don't even start because it'll end badly. Whether you are an entrepreneur or not, the world needs you in some capacity to make a difference. Be open to every possible way that exists for you to do that.
