What's your business, and who are your customers?

My company is called Stronger Foundations Coaching. Our mission is to partner with students to rebuild their relationship with learning. A group of thoughtful and caring coaching and learning experts, we offer ADHD/EF coaching, test prep tutoring, academic tutoring, and body doubling to students ages 10-22 with ADHD and/or executive functioning challenges who are struggling academically.

Tell us about yourself

I am the Founder and CEO of Stronger Foundations Coaching. I am also a professional ADHD Coach and Academic Life Coach. I started my business in 2019 when I was taking classes at UCSF: I needed a way to support myself, and I've always enjoyed teaching, so I began tutoring students 1:1. Fast forward to today, and I've built a company with one full-time employee, two part-time employees, and five active tutors. We've supported over 200+ clients in 1:1 and small group settings, and our students have had some incredible results, including:

  • Going from failing math to getting a 97% in Algebra II (Jan. 2023)
  • Going from a 32 to a perfect 36 on the ACT (Feb. 2023)
  • Increasing from a 3.0 GPA to a 4.0 GPA in a single semester (Fall 2022)

I am motivated to keep working because of the impact that we're able to have on our students. It's so fulfilling to see how much easier and happier they are after working with us!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The impact that we've been able to have on our students.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The company building process. The "Death Valley" of entrepreneurship is real! I almost gave up. I'm so grateful to everyone who has cheered me on and helped me get through the tough patches.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Make sure that the first thing you do is hire an accountant, bookkeeper, and lawyer. (Setting up the right foundation for your business will save you a lot of time and effort down the line.) Also, sometimes you have to spend money to make money. Finally, ask for help! The journey will be much more enjoyable and doable if you do this.
