Wellness, Wherever You Are - Strong with Joy

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joy Lynn Parrish, Owner of Strong with Joy, located in Coto De Caza, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hi, my name is Joy, and I own and manage Strong with Joy! I empower women (and some men!) to find their strong wherever they are through personal virtual wellness. I use strategic life coaching principles to guide and encourage my clients on their personalized fitness journeys.

Tell us about yourself

One of the last times I interacted with my abusive partner, something rose up in me. I told them that I was going to give my entire life to making sure women knew their value and for everything that they stole from me, that I would give my years to making sure it was paid back to women like me. Leaving that situation, I stumbled upon strength training. It completely shifted my paradigm! I grew in physical strength and saw the immediate change in my body, and I thought, "wow! This is empowering! What else could I change in my life?" Fast forward four years, I left my career and my home, I studied and got a Health and Wellness Coaching certificate, a Strategic Life Coaching certificate, a NASM personal training and Nutrition certificate, to name a few, and I am running a business to empower women to find their strong!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly, my biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been moving just by offering Health and Wellness services. It has become closely integrated with my own personal growth: mentally, physically, and emotionally into my Health and Wellness programs/packages. I think one of the greatest benefits to having experienced the suffering and the intense need to overcome that a lot of my clients have is that I have next-level empathy, but I also know when to say, "Okay, that was in the past, what are we going to do about that now?" So, in short, my biggest accomplishment is empowering other women.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, one of the most difficult things that comes with being a business owner has been getting over the limiting belief that I have PERMISSION to do the damn thing. Being a woman and a business owner, I've had several people tell me that it was against my makeup. Like what? So I learned to give myself permission and empower myself! So, if you are a woman and a business owner, YOU can give yourself full permission to be as much of a boss woman and be as feminine, soft, and strong as you want.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know that you have something unique to offer the world that only you can give; even if they have the same business and products, people will return for YOU.
  2. YouTube is your FRIEND.
  3. I know it's exciting to start something new, and you want to run with your ideas. Do THAT! But also, do all of the "boring" stuff right the first time: business entity, state compliance, taxes, consent forms, and the correct insurance. I've watched people near and dear to me go under because they would get to it "later." Might as well knock it out while you have the excitement and energy!
