Strike Recovery and Performance - Bernard Kim
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bernard Kim, Co-Founder of Strike Recovery and Performance Inc., located in Burnaby, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Strike Recovery & Performance is a premier sports injury rehab and prevention centre for all patients, from children and seniors to elite athletes. We are committed to providing the latest state-of-the-art therapy and technology to quickly get you back to the activities that you love.
Tell us about yourself
After doing my graduate program at Palmer West College of Chiropractic in San Jose, California, I was lucky enough to get an opportunity to join the renowned "OC Fight Docs" team at Kessler Family Wellness in Orange County, California where I worked as an associate Chiropractor and got mentored by some of the best practitioners in the world. From my first week, I was getting to work with some of my favourite professional athletes I watched growing up, from the UFC, Bellator, NFL, NHL, NCAA, and Olympics.
In April of 2018, I, unfortunately, wasn't able to renew my American work visa and decided to return to my Vancouver roots. It was upon returning that my colleague and co-owner of Strike Recovery, Dr. Ali Ravji, decided to partner up. We wanted to open a clinic that offered the same type of treatments that "professional athletes" get but accessible to the general public. We opened our doors in Burnaby, BC, on January 2019. Kind of a cliche thing to say, but our driving motivation for each day really is our patients and the Burnaby community. We are fortunate enough to spend a bit more time with our patients than the average clinic, which allows us to further connect and be a part of their journey to healing.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Easily, the compliments we hear from our patients after their first experience. Sometimes people just want to be heard and cared for, and to offer a space in the community that can give those feelings is priceless. When patients tell us that they didn't just feel like a "number" while with us, it is, unfortunately, a reflection on the current insurance model of our healthcare system, it is also one of the reasons why I tend to support when other clinic owners or entrepreneurs are also health care practitioners. Any financial success in our industry should not come at the cost of anyone else's health, and consistency in quality of care should always be a top priority!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I would have to say making sure the systems and organization of the clinic are sound. This can only work with the proper team and support network, which we've been so lucky to have at Strike Recovery. If these foundations aren't set, I do not believe it is possible to organically scale a clinic-type business without losing the quality of care that allowed you to flourish in the first place.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't do it alone - have a partner you can trust who complements your weaknesses.
- Start small with low overhead.
- Try to have a proper work-life balance, so you don't "fall out of love" with the industry you're in.
