Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shari Stricker, Certified Health Coach of Strickly Healthy, located in Tampa, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a holistic health coach for women. Although it is common to gain weight, experience brain fog, not sleep well, have constant cravings, and feel tired all the time as we age, it is not normal and doesn't have to happen. Getting healthy and losing weight isn't complicated. You need to nourish your body with real food while drastically reducing your sugar and processed foods. The idea is simple, but it is not easy. There is no one size fit for nutrition. That is where I come in. I help you through the stages of change. I help you create new habits. I listen, I support, I educate, and I encourage. I help you change your mindset from I can't do it so I can. I help my clients ditch the toxic diet culture and form a new relationship with food.
Tell us about yourself
When my son was 15, he was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. The doctors told us it didn't matter what he ate. This didn't make sense to me, so I started researching and reading anything I could find. I found others' stories on how they reached remission by changing their diet. As a family, we made changes. The goal was to help my son feel better, but what I wasn't expecting was how much better we would all feel. I began losing weight. My IBS went away, my joints didn't hurt, and I was sleeping better. I became a health coach to help others make changes to their lifestyle in order to lose weight and feel better. Changing my diet has resulted in a fitter, happier life for myself and my family. I love sharing what I have learned in order to help others put new healthy habits in place so they can also feel better, lose weight, and live a happy, healthy life!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment of being a business owner had the courage to start this business. It can be very intimidating to start something new at 53 years old. It is hard to put yourself out there and share your story. There is nothing better than helping others lose weight, feel better about themselves and become a healthier version of themselves. I am very grateful that I am able to do this every day.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
When owning a business, there are so many moving parts, and it is very easy to get overwhelmed. The hardest part for me has been learning the technology. Creating and updating my website and all that goes into it has been difficult. I have spent a lot of time on YouTube watching tutorials!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start a business around something that you are truly passionate about and something that lights you up. Believing in what you are doing goes a long way when it comes to putting in the time and effort.
- Just start and don't quit. You don't have to know everything. It is hard, and you will make mistakes; just learn from them and pivot and adjust as you go. There have been many times that I thought this was too hard and I couldn't do it. There have been times when I have had an inferiority complex and feelings of insecurity. The key is to keep moving forward and doing the best you can. Remind yourself why you started to begin with.
- Put a support system in place. Finding a mentor can be very beneficial. Knowing you have someone to talk to and run ideas past is incredibly helpful. Also, finding people that are not only supportive but will build you back up when you are feeling inadequate makes a huge difference.
