Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bryce Strecker, Founder of Strecker Sport Psychology, located in Kansas City, MO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I founded and run Strecker Sport Psychology LLC, a Mental Performance Coaching business. I work primarily with athletes on the mental aspects of their sports. My client base includes athletes ranging from high school age to the professional levels, as well as individuals in other high-stress professions where high-level performance under pressure is necessary. I aid them by providing tools and techniques to help them perform at a higher level by better managing their nerves, getting in 'The Zone,' blocking out distractions, controlling their self-talk, and a number of other Mental Skills. I provide individual sessions as well as group and team seminars both in person and virtually to people around the globe.
I also provide a weekly email newsletter called 'The Coach's Corner' where I discuss implementing Sport Psychology and Mental Performance techniques from a coach's perspective. Striving to help coaches have better access to this information and pass it on to their athletes on a daily basis.
Tell us about yourself
I played sports my entire life and found a lot of success, and then I really started to struggle with handling adversity and poor performance during my time playing baseball in college. I was really struggling with the mental demands that collegiate baseball brought. Then I stumbled down the rabbit hole that is Sport Psychology and Mental Performance and realized how much this information could have benefited me as a younger athlete, which led me to pursue my Master's Degree in Applied Sport Psychology from Adams State University. While completing my degree, I decided that I wanted to find a way to make this work my career and have the chance to do it my way. So I decided to start my own business and start helping every team and athlete I could get in contact with.
My motivation to do this work each and every day is to provide information that would have transformed my playing career for as many athletes as I can. Every athlete on the planet should have access to this information, and my goal is to spread it as much as possible and help athletes take control of their mental performance and perform at high levels as they've always dreamed of.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Some of my biggest accomplishments running my own business include working with multiple Olympic athletes, being integrated into multiple NCAA Division II sports programs, integrating into an eSports organization, and providing this information to athletes and coaches in 5 different countries.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things I had to learn in getting started was the sheer amount of work it takes to run a business. You never get the chance to see all the tedious back-end work that goes into running a functioning company until you find yourself doing it. I've had to learn so many new skills to help get my business up and running efficiently, things I never thought about before starting this journey.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Go for it! If you have a passion for starting something, go for it! Give it everything you've got. No one's going to do it for you. If you want something, you have to go out and get it.
- Shoot your shot. Don't be intimidated to reach out to people or companies you want to work with. The worst thing they can do is say no. If you never send that email or make that phone call, you'll never know whether or not it could have worked. So just give it a shot; you never know what could come from it!
- Keep a sense of balance. No matter how bad you want it, make sure you don't overdo it. Give yourself breaks, take time off, and find other hobbies. Keeping a sense of balance in your life is so beneficial for your overall health and well-being, as well as the business you're growing. When you take time away, you'll be even hungrier to get back to work when that break is over. Burnout is a very real thing, so keep things in check, find a sense of balance, and you'll thank yourself for it in the long run.
