Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jim Watts, Owner of Stop A Cramp, located in Richmond, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We sell a device that prevents leg cramps from waking you at night. Our customers are in 50 years of age and up.

Tell us about yourself

I tried for two years to find a solution through my doctor for my nocturnal leg cramps. Sitting in my kitchen chair, I thought about what's different about me that causes my leg cramps. I came up with a theory based on my body's mechanics and made my first strap. It worked for me from that day on over twelve years ago; I haven't had a leg cramp since. Out of the three hundred pairs I've sold, only two people said they didn't work for them. One of my test subjects came into the shop I was working at and yelled, "You're a genius." It works with extreme cases and gives me satisfaction knowing I created something that works like nothing else ever has.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Inventing and patenting a product that is the greatest prevention of idiopathic leg cramps.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Marketing is the hardest for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it when you are young.
  2. Take a risk but not one so great that you jeopardize yourself.
  3. Search the market and find out where the demand and money are.
