Helping Business Owners Express Themselves - Stockdale Media

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Scott Stockdale, Founder of Stockdale Media, located in Harrogate, United Kingdom.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As a freelance writer, I help business owners say what they need to say in as few words as possible.

Here's what clients have said about my work:
"Scott is a master of his craft! When I reached out to see if he could write blog content for Codum's website, I wasn't sure what to expect. No need to worry, though. After agreeing on a proposal, he wrote engaging content for our website.
A few months later, Codum is now ranking in position #1 on Google UK search results for two of our target keywords! Scott's a pleasure to work with, extremely reliable, and a great communicator. I would highly recommend him to any business :)."
Isabella Hoesch | Founder of Codum.cc

"Scott wrote a script for me for my new YouTube channel, and I absolutely loved his work ethic, attention to detail, and the questions he asked when drafting the script. I would work with him again. He was a pleasure to be around!"
Humphrey Yang | Finance YouTuber with over 885,000 subscribers

"Scott is a brilliant writer, a fantastic editor, and an absolute delight as a person.
When I was looking for someone to help me edit articles for my Medium publication, asking him was a no-brainer. I can't recommend him enough!"
Luba Sigaud | Founder of The Happy Human

Tell us about yourself

I've been freelancing on and off since 2020, but I made the leap to full-time in December 2022 after meeting these conditions:

  1. 12 months of savings in the bank.
  2. At least one steady client.
  3. Replace my monthly 9–5 income (~$2,000/month) with the money I make online (freelancing, blogging, online courses, and affiliates).
  4. A proven process to land high-value clients

It's early days, but I love writing, I love working with clients, and I LOVE getting to set my own hours! There's nothing better than hiking with friends on a weekday. This schedule freedom is what motivates me to do what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I recently started working with a community of 7- and 8-figure eCommerce store owners to repurpose their content into helpful guides. They're currently my highest-value client, and they're an absolute delight to work with! They're really happy with our relationship, and I can see us working together for many years.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a freelancer, you're 100% responsible for your business. When times are good, you can take the credit! When times are tough, though, you've got to take it on the chin. Grit is essential, and you've got to make things happen. There's no employer to fall back on.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you're a freelancer, build a portfolio of work. I've been writing on Medium.com since September 2020, and my articles have clocked over half a million views. These articles have attracted clients, meaning I haven't had to apply for jobs. Inbound opportunities have come my way. This can happen to you when you build a portfolio in public.
  2. Build on the side. I've been freelancing on and off since 2020. This was to prove to myself that I like freelancing and I can attract high-value clients. This meant giving up weekends and evenings to work on my business, but I wouldn't be ready if I hadn't done this.
  3. Consider stepping down to part-time hours in your corporate job before running your business full-time. Customers and clients can smell desperation, so you want to run your business with an abundance mindset – not scarcity. Having a regular paycheck from your employer can help with this.
