Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Karim Alami, ND, founder of Stittsville Health & Wellness Inc., located in Stittsville, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help people revive their health to live their best life. I am a Naturopathic Doctor with a special interest in treating people suffering from digestive health concerns as well as individuals suffering from mental health. I strongly believe the digestive system to be directly and indirectly connected to all diseases, including mental health.
My goal is to use natural and gentle modalities such as diet/lifestyle changes, herbal medicine, nutraceuticals/vitamins and minerals, IV-Vitamin Therapy, and traditional Chinese medicine to support the body's natural ability to heal. I take a holistic approach to treatment in order to treat the root cause of my patient's health concerns.
Tell us about yourself
I always say that being a doctor was my fate. I never wanted to be a doctor, but I loved to teach. When I learned about naturopathic medicine, I fell in love with the concept of taking a holistic approach to supporting the body's innate ability to heal and treat the root cause rather than mask the symptoms. It was only after becoming a naturopathic doctor that I learned the word "doctor" comes from the Latin word "docēre," which means to teach. I am so passionate about what I do!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Growing my practice from the ground up based on referrals. The biggest compliment I get from my patients is when they refer their family and friends to me.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
With my type of business, I advise patients on healthy living and healthy eating. One of the hardest things I have come across so far is finding a work-life balance so that I am practicing what I preach but also keeping my availability open so that I am able to continue to help those who need it.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Perseverance is key. Nothing that lasts gets built overnight. Water your garden if you want it to flourish. Focus on providing value, and the rest will fall in place eventually.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Prior to getting into naturopathic medical school, I built and ran a first aid teaching company. During my initial few years of practicing as an ND, I taught holistic nutrition at the Institute of Holistic Nutrition. Currently, I am devoting most of my time to one-on-one practice, as I have come to realize that there is healing in even the doctor-patient relationship.
