Wellness for the Whole Family - Stephanie Doerksen
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephanie Doerksen, founder of Steph Doerksen Acupuncture, located in Victoria, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Hello, I'm Steph. I'm an acupuncturist and mindfulness coach in Victoria, BC. My practice is focused on emotional health, pregnancy and postpartum care, and childhood wellness.
As a trained pediatric acupuncturist, I love working with kids and teaching parents how to use traditional Chinese medicine principles to keep their children healthy. I also enjoy supporting women through pregnancy and helping people improve their mental health.
Tell us about yourself
When I was in my late 20s, I experienced some health challenges that my doctor couldn't really help me with. I began to explore options outside of the regular medical system, and I discovered Traditional Chinese Medicine. I became fascinated with how our emotions play a role in our physical health and how I can support people to improve both their mental and physical health at the same time.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is connecting with my clients. I've found that if I focus on growing my business, it can distract me from being present and attending to the needs of each client. But if I focus on showing up for each client and really being present for what they need, then my business begins to grow all by itself.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest part is knowing that everything is up to me. The success or failure of my business comes down to what I put into it; at times, that can feel really stressful. That's the hard part, but it's also the most empowering part.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't try to figure everything out on your own. Running a business takes many different skills like marketing, web design, bookkeeping in addition to whatever product or service you are providing. Find people to help you do the parts that you don't know.
- Don't get discouraged if your business doesn't grow right away. It might take a few tries and some experimentation to figure out what works for you.
- Keep it fun. Running a business is hard. If you aren't having fun doing it, it's probably not worthwhile.
