Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephanie Brown Kegler, Founder of Dancing Without Sin®, located in Fayetteville, NC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is a MOTIVATIONAL #MOVEPEOPLE MINISTRY MOVEMENT! I give my students and clients realistic fitness and wellness goals. The goal is not to be a runway model but to be able to run down the runway. I offer Sinless chair, refusal to give in resistance band training, dance fitness, boot camp, sinless abs, church fitness which includes an all gospel and inspirational playlist, fitness for disabilities, one on one coaching, personal training, healthy cooking demos, meal prep, and the list goes on!
I also have an annual Cancer event and raise proceeds to bless a local charity. Our goal is to change the world so that they want to do things that will make them mentally and physically stronger. #MOVEPEOPLE
Tell us about yourself
I became a small business owner because God said I had to be. My dad was a business owner, and I had to work for him growing up. I hated it and vowed just to work a good job until I got old. Well, my entire attitude has changed. I started teaching dance fitness in 2009. Whenever a church wanted some kind of fitness event, the other dance fitness instructors always recommended me for some reason. While teaching, I would always say, look, it's ok to dance; we are not smoking, drinking, cursing, so this is Dancing Without Sin. I said that for years and then, duh! The Lord tapped me on my forehead, and that's how this Dancing Without Sin® business was created. The group that's missing is our forgotten Christians. I now provide an all-gospel/inspirational playlist for churches, religious organizations, and groups. So now everyone is moving to the beat. It may be different beats, but they are moving.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is DANCING WITHOUT SIN becoming a registered trademark! My 2nd Trademark MOVEMENT MINISTER, a subsidiary of Dancing Without Sin, is now approved. But my biggest accomplishment to date is purchasing my first commercial property last month. I am currently working on the DANCING WITHOUT SIN MOVEMENT CENTER little by little. Hoping to find some grants that would assist with the repairs. I am extremely proud!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is knowing when to say no. As business owners, we can sometimes take on too much and feel we will lose business by saying no. But once we realize we are providing better services by saying no and not over-scheduling, the customer will get top-notch service.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Are you passionate about it? Question yourself.
- Have you started building clientele before leasing or buying a brick-and-mortar? It's important to build through different avenues before jumping into anything too costly.
- How can your business assist the community? The community where you open your business is the nucleolus of your business. Is there a need?
