Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Skip Stone, founder, and CEO of STASHLOGIX, Inc., located in Boulder, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

STASHLOGIX makes innovative cannabis storage cases, handbags, and accessories that promote responsibility and discretion. We believe you can be a parent, a professional, or just be yourself, without worrying about your kids accessing your edibles or without the judgment that comes from the tell-tale odors. Our mission is to break the stoner stigma with functional and fashionable cannabis lifestyle products.

Tell us about yourself

I had a well-established career as a water treatment engineer, but I couldn't ignore the possibility of starting my own business in the cannabis industry. I wanted to tackle the problem of cannabis storage. I had two young kids (now two teens). I felt being a responsible parent, and a cannabis consumer didn't need to be mutually exclusive. I wanted to help myself and my parents just like me. People want to be discreet; they don't want to smell like a skunk wherever they go. We've helped tens of thousands of people incorporate cannabis without the judgment that comes with it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building a team dedicated to the mission.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing cash flow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a plan on how to fund your business first. Will you bootstrap it, seek investments, take on debt, or a combination of all of the above? Having access to capital is a huge leg-up to starting a business.
  2. Find a niche that isn't overly competitive. We're considered a 'picks'n shovels' business for the cannabis industry, which is an analogy to the businesses that sold picks and shovels during the Gold Rush in the 1800s, many of whom did very well compared to the actual gold miners.
  3. Find mentors and advisors that are able to share advice. Working with someone who has "been there and done that" will help you avoid common mistakes and keep you focused.
