Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coffee roasting, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily, the founder of Carabello Coffee, a philanthropic coffee roasting company based in the US.

Tell us all about your business...

Philanthropic Coffee Roasting Company. We started 12 years ago with $300 and a pop corn popper. We now serve thousands of people a week, and donate money monthly to several charities in coffee producing nations.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a business owner?

A hobby of roasting coffee got us started, but what fuels us the desire to help feed, clothe and care for the poor and handicapped in Nicaragua.

As an entrepreneur, what does success ultimately mean to you?

Staying open and thriving during 2020!! Overcoming immense trials trying to expand as a shop. Took 15 months longer than planned and cost us thousands but we still opened and succeeded.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being an entrepreneur?

The constancy. It is hard to get a break, even if you are out of town, things still break!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

  1. Lower your personal expenses as much as possible, to put the least amount of strain on the company at the beginning.
  2. You have to be committed 110% to be successful.
  3. Know your cost of goods!
