Create Your Signature Program - Starr Consulting

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Debbi Starr, Founder and CEO of Starr Consulting, located in Washington, IN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm an online business strategist and coach helping women coaches and creators create a simple framework to grow their businesses to get leads every day and clients every week.

We design your Triple Threat framework so that you can get leads on demand, then turn those leads into hot buyers without using icky sales tactics, and then build your scaling machine so you can hit those $20K revenue months.

My ideal customer is a middle-aged professional woman that has some success in her coaching business but is ready for more. I also help the professional corporate woman take her expertise and turn it into a signature program online so she can say goodbye to the cubicle life.

Tell us about yourself

I've been around technology before the 'Internet' was born :) So that gives you a hint of my age. I remember when word processors and computers were first introduced into the business world. And I painfully remember how frustrating it was to try to learn technology without any help.

I went from supporting IT and being a project manager for the software support to training in the corporate setting. I discovered that I had a knack for translating 'technical jargon' into an everyday, usable language where people could actually understand and implement what I was teaching them.

From there, I started teaching Business Marketing at the University and discovered that my real passion is teaching and supporting others, especially with marketing and technology. I started dabbling with selling on Amazon and became hooked on working online.

Fast forward a couple of decades, and I am now doing what I love best - helping other women entrepreneurs create signature programs that they can scale, so they can work less, earn more, and have more of an impact in the world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is developing a thriving business that supports my family and seeing my clients thrive. The greatest joy I receive is helping other women get past their own hurdles and help them become independent online with their businesses. Seeing their confidence grow and helping them make a difference to their people lights me up.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is staying in your lane. There are so many shiny objects and gurus telling you to try this or do something different. It's hard to know exactly what to do next in your business if you are trying to grow a sustainable business that you can scale (i.e., make enough money to live on).

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Truly understand your ideal client's problem and market to that. So many people create a business based on what 'they' think is the solution to the problem. But most of your ideal clients are not at that place yet. As the expert, you understand the real issue, but your client doesn't. They just want the immediate issue fixed, and now. They don't care about how. So I call it the 'bleeding neck' problem... once you nail that, your ideal client will come running.
  2. Stay true to yourself. What works for others may not work for you. Just because someone else posts on social media 10 times a week doesn't mean you have to. If that's not your comfort zone, don't do it. If you don't like being on video but love to write, then create a business around your strengths, not what you see others doing.
  3. Be prepared to play the long game. Remember, all those 'overnight' successful people out there took years to build their businesses. Most of the influencers and top performers that you look up to have teams of people and lots of money to spend on ads, etc. Be clear on your 'why' and know that the business isn't going to become huge overnight. Then implement some good systems, and 'slow & steady wins the win' should become your mantra.
