Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Latosha Johnson, owner of Starengu, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Starengu (pronounced starring you) is a content creation consulting company dedicated to helping women thrive after their 9 to 5. We encourage and teach women how to leverage their jobs to fund their side hustle. Starengu is dedicated to helping you reduce the time it takes to connect with your audience.

Tell us about yourself

I live, breathe, and sleep anything related to content creation and technology. Throughout my time in the corporate world, I grew increasingly frustrated working for managers who were a couple of fries short of a happy meal or for those who got promoted not because of what they knew but because of who they knew. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out my decision. My "second act" was going to be ALL about ME. I decided to invest in myself and want other women to do the same. It brings me great joy to help women realize they don’t need to ask for a seat at the table. Starengu can provide them with the tools they need to build their own.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Many of my clients come to me confused and frustrated about how to start their side hustle. I love seeing how my client’s demeanor changes to joy and confidence by the end of our project.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

You can’t pour from an empty cup. You have to make sure you take care of yourself, so you can be in the best position to take care of your clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. “If you’re everything to everyone, then you risk being no one,” is a phrase I came up with several years ago that serves as my mission in life and business. Fun fact: I host a podcast called Hustle in Faith and sign off every episode with this phrase
  2. When it comes to acquiring a skill or service, if you don’t have money, then be willing to invest the time; if you don’t have time, then be willing to pay for what you need.
  3. Continue to surround yourself with people who are skilled in areas that are not your strengths. Doing so will place you in a position to reduce the time it takes for you to grow.
