Tell us about yourself

Started a part-time job on summer vacation between 10th and 11th grades as a small engine mechanic. Then became parts manager, then some sales, then bought the business out when they were closing in 1985 and re-named it Stanley Lawn & Garden, and continue helping customers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our reputation for honest, top-quality equipment and service. In the day when dealers sold the name brands only, we won several sales awards for new equipment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Adjusting to this changing economy and industry. Also, finding good mechanics in this field.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. In the outdoor power equipment industry, find good mechanics.
  2. Find a product line that is good quality with little box store competition.
  3. Grow within your means.
