What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach stand-up comedy to people like myself with mental health issues as a way of building confidence and fighting public stigma. I also give conference keynotes that are funny, educational, and inspiring that give people a totally different perspective on mental health.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a counsellor and stand-up comic with bipolar. I teach a class at a community college here in Vancouver that has nothing to do with mental health, but occasionally I would see people have life-changing experiences doing comedy, and I thought it would be great to give that to people who wanted to do comedy but who also want a life-changing experience. Changing lives is what motivates me, plus the chance to have a lot of fun!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Winning a Governor General's Award for my work destigmatizing mental illness.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Never having job security and having to constantly promote. Having to work long hours, but it's something I love, so it doesn't feel like work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be prepared to constantly promote.
  2. Be prepared for financial insecurity.
  3. Never give up!!!!
