Healthcare Consulting Firm - Stamp & Chase

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Burl Stamp, Founder of Stamp & Chase, located in St. Louis, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Stamp & Chase is a performance improvement firm. To complement process improvement, our expertise and focus are on the sometimes neglected "p" in this work - people. Right now, companies are looking to us to help them re-energize and re-engage their workforce as we emerge from the pandemic, with a particular emphasis on reducing burnout and turnover. The majority of our clients are health care provider organizations, but our tools and strategies are industry agnostic.

Tell us about yourself

I spent the first 15 years of my career in executive roles in healthcare systems. Both personal and professional experience convinced me that we could do better in how we approach professional development for frontline leaders and their staff. Today, we have to do better. Making the workplace environment better for dedicated professionals in the trenches daily is our purpose and passion.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Since we're a B2B company, we measure our success in terms of our customer's success. Our biggest accomplishments are reducing turnover, increasing staff engagement, and improving customer engagement/satisfaction.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The ups and downs are exaggerated for start-ups and smaller businesses. Business is always a roller coaster, but big, well-established companies have an easier time smoothing out the steep climbs and dramatic drops in the ride. For smaller businesses, it's more like riding Space Mountain, where you never know what's around the next corner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know that it's likely to take you more time and cost you more money than you think to get traction and grow the business. Plan accordingly.
  2. Edison's insight on the relative importance of "inspiration" vs. "perspiration" is so true. Persistence in all business aspects–from customer discovery to sales and product/service delivery – distinguishes winners from losers.
  3. Mistakes and missteps are inevitable – and extremely valuable. Learn from them, course correct, and move on.
