Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rhys Moore, president, and CEO of St Johns Fragrance Company, located in St. Thomas, VI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

St Johns is a men's grooming brand founded 75 years ago by Capt. John Smith, USN, in the Virgin Islands. Our customers are men who love classic scents and appreciate the handcrafted components of our packaging and products. St Johns is unapologetically masculine.

Tell us about yourself

I have worked on a number of turnaround situations. Still, St Johns was very interesting too because they were an "old brand" with plenty of history and a great story. I realized that this story could be really, really resonant with a younger guy. St Johns is also a great product. Our customers motivate me; we have a very loyal and dedicated customer base - both retail and direct - and they appreciate what the brand signifies.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Saving the business and propelling it forward after years of neglect and the total catastrophe of Hurricanes Maria and Irma in St Thomas.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balancing cash with opportunity and resources.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate about your business.
  2. Surround yourself with strong and good people.
  3. Keep an eye on cash flow.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Always go the extra mile for your customers, even when it seems futile or unprofitable. Good deeds always pay off at some point.
