Tax Ease for Women of Color - SSBM Consulting

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sandra Morno, Owner of SSBM Consulting LLC, located in Miami, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Tax Strategist for Black Women Travelers. I help women of color with US service-based businesses maximize their tax savings so that they can do more things that bring them joy and peace, like traveling and self-care. My signature program is a yearlong Tax Armor service that educates clients on how to make their money work for them. Our intention is more than a motto; it's a way of life—here's to paying NO more than your fair share.

Tell us about yourself

I actually stumbled into working in this industry. I was helping a friend out while I was in graduate school, and who would have thought 12-plus years later, I would still be working in the industry. I started off with simply helping people file and keep track of their expenses and making sure they took every deduction they possibly could. I realized then that I enjoyed helping people maximize their refunds and helping them with IRS issues like audits and penalties. After learning the hard way about business structures and their importance, I got my first IRS happy gram in the mail, stating I owed them $2500. From that point on, I told myself I needed to learn all that I could about taxes and how to keep my money in my pocket legally, of course. What keeps me going is knowing that I can help someone else learn how to use the tax code to help them keep more of their money in their pocket.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having the freedom to travel when I want, help other women, and continue to grow my business.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Knowing that failure doesn't define who you are. It was a moment in life that can be used to take you to the next level.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Know why you are starting the business. If it's just for money, it will make it hard to stay motivated. Make sure you have an account set up specifically for business expenses and use it only for that. Find someone who can help keep you accountable and push you when you feel like giving up.
