Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Allison Sardo, Owner of Springboard Speech & Language Services, located in Winchester, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Springboard Speech & Language Services is a private practice providing pediatric speech and language services to children in Winchester and its surrounding communities. Specializing in childhood speech and language disorders from birth to age 18, our innovative and highly trained speech-language pathologists provide individualized therapy to each child based on their unique strengths and challenges.

We are dedicated to providing high-quality care rooted in our field's most current evidence-based practices within a fun, welcoming, and supportive environment.

Tell us about yourself

After working for ten years as a school-based speech-language pathologist (SLP), I felt ready to take on the challenge of starting my private pediatric practice. My motivation for doing so was based on a strong desire to provide quality evidence-based therapy strategies without the administrative red tape many therapists experience working in education. I also wanted to work with families to teach them how to carry techniques learned in therapy into their child's natural home environment and follow them over time to support their child's care.

I am so glad I faced my fears and went for it! I wake up every day motivated to create therapy activities that are fun, inspiring, and engaging for every child. I genuinely love being a part of their progress with communication. With a smaller practice as the sole therapy provider, I can offer more specialized care for each family and provide treatment that matches each child's needs rather than using blanket therapy approaches that may work for some but not others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting referrals from local neuropsychologists and Boston-area hospitals.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's tough when you are sick or need to take personal time off because you don't get paid for your leave. However, the flexibility of making my schedule fit my own family's needs makes it worth it!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a mentor who can coach and support you as you get your business up and running.
  2. Don't expect to reap the rewards instantly. It takes time to grow the business you want. Focus on establishing your reputation so that people begin talking about what you have to offer.
  3. You WILL make mistakes along the way, and that is OK! Mistakes are an opportunity for us to learn how to tweak what we are doing to continue along the path of success.
