What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a resonance business coach, and I support first-generation women and femmes in the United States who are looking to build productive lives and businesses that celebrate their culture, their values, and rest.

Tell us about yourself

I became the coach my mom needed. I realized my love for women-owned businesses came because I grew up on a single-mother income who owned a viable business and eventually lost it all because she didn't have any resources or support. Now I provide that support to my clients from a trauma-informed lens.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Sticking through it during and post-pandemic. It was a hard time for all of us, and it was really painful for me to get calls from clients crying because they had to shut down or they were losing employees. I think overcoming a global pandemic is a big accomplishment for a lot of business owners.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Knowing what not to do. As business owners, we know we have to wear a lot of hats, and it's naturally easy to jump on tasks because we can, but it doesn't mean we have to. Delegating has been one of the hardest things I've had to learn, and I see that in my clients as well.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Understand your big, bold vision. What drives you to do what you do? What is the legacy and impact you want to leave in the world? There's no right or wrong answer. I often tell people they've arrived at their big, bold vision when their voice cracks as they share it with others. For me, it's to leave a foundation that gives away a home to a single mom every year. The first time I shared it publicly, I could barely say it because I was shaking.
  2. Focus on solving a problem instead of making your solution better. Many times I see business owners focused on perfecting their product or service without asking themselves if these activities will actually benefit their end users. If you truly learn the challenge your client is facing, then you could make a stronger impact by figuring out how to solve that for them.
  3. Learn how to edit. As you start and/or grow your business, there are going to be developments and improvements in your processes, products, and offers. I've seen this happen in new and seasoned businesses that try to give way too much to their clients and end up overwhelming them instead of helping. Many times in business, less is actually more.
