Fun And Active Environment - Sports For Fitness Youth Club
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kenny Boreham, Director of Sports For Fitness Youth Club, located in Acton, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a not-for-profit organization that offers active programming for kids at an affordable price in Halton Hills. Our mission is to help everyone find a place and time to be able to enjoy affordable and well-organized sports. Our family has been organizing pickup hockey for ten years and fun skating for kids for five years. We found that every year we had more and more interest, so we created Sports for Fitness so more kids could participate in our low-cost physical activities. Some of the programs that we offer are Kids Fun Fitness, Kids Fun Skating, Hockey Mini Camp, Development Skating, and a Kids Hockey Summer League. All of our coaches and staff are volunteers, which helps us with keeping costs down. Over the years, our family has enjoyed a lot of fun participating in sports as well as making some wonderful friends. Our wish is for everyone to enjoy this same opportunity.
Tell us about yourself
I am a father of 3 that loves coaching. I found that there was a gap when it came to activities for kids that just wanted to have fun. It is a great feeling when you see the smile on a kid's face after they realize they have succeeded at something new.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We started the organization four years ago with a small group of our friends' children. This year we sold out our summer program in 24 hours with close to 100 kids from multiple local communities. This is a 515% increase in registration since the infancy of the summer program in 2019. We have over 150 participants in all of our events. We have created something that people like and enjoy, and they are now spreading the word for us.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
When we started, we did not know how to start an organization in Ontario, and it was very frustrating. We had to learn how to navigate regulations in the right way. I think this is the hardest part of a start-up.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Keep working hard and have patience.
- Create a good product, and it will sell itself over time.
- Don't do it alone. Find people that will support you in a positive manner.
