What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a family, headshot, and senior portrait photographer. I serve all of Northern Colorado. My specialty in photography is special needs families.

Tell us about yourself

I began my journey as a photographer as one of my sons has Autism. He is challenging to photograph, and I so deeply wanted beautiful, quality images of my family that shared our passion for life and who we are, even if everyone isn't always smiling and looking at the camera. My husband challenged me to be the change that I wanted to see in the photography industry, and that inspired my desire to serve families like mine blossomed into a career that I just love.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is educating my clients about photography. When I have the opportunity to create a fun and memorable experience for my clients that tells their stories through cherished images, that is how I measure success. When the parents adore their gallery of images, I know that I have given them a true gift.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The photography industry is inodiated with photographers, so it can be challenging to stand out.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Decide who your target market is and be comfortable knowing that your business is not going to be the right fit for everyone.
  2. Always continue to educate yourself and learn and grow by pushing yourself to learn new things.
  3. Show yourself grace when trying to grow a business and find a tribe of people that can cheer you on and hold you accountable to your goals.
