Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Laila Aitken, Founder and CEO of Split.fyi, located in Santa Monica, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Split.fyi is a technology platform and divorce management tool that also is an emotional compass, providing one place where people feel safe to explore options, gather information, and connect with others, all while working on healing through their divorce and separation. All of which help people get through the stickiness of breakup, heartache, divorce, and starting over. We serve anyone at any stage of their divorce or separation.

Tell us about yourself

Passion led me here… I am a serial Entrepreneur who decided to transform my pain into purpose. My first-hand experience in a very long divorce inspired me to create a place with alternative solutions, support, and community in order to mitigate time lost, unequal opportunities, financial drain, and the negative mental health tax one faces while splitting. People, their stories, and their need for support motivate me to come to work every day. Just knowing that we have grown a community of people who not only support one another but rely on what we provide for their sanity check each day is honestly motivational enough, not to mention the amazing colleagues I am surrounded by who inspire me every day with their knowledge and their shared passion.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Turning my pain into purpose and executing an idea that burned inside of me and one that I wished I had as a support system when I was going through my own divorce. Honestly, having enough guts to launch a tech company so that I am able to support as many people as possible through one of life's hardest transitions and life events so that they never have to face it alone or uneducated is something I am proud of.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Managing your time in the most efficient way possible and without guilt. I am always juggling with "who is on first base" when it comes to what is the most important task to finish in a day's time since all of it is important and relevant when running a company.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take a deep breath and know it is a marathon, not a sprint- so have patience.
  2. Take the time to understand the value or product you are trying to create and get really good at explaining it.
  3. Make sure you have a support system in place and do not do everything on your own. If you don't know how to do something, find someone who can be part of your team and knows that thing. Remember, it is ok not to know how to do everything and ask for help. Essentially, be vulnerable!
