Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Samantha Attard, Founder of Spiro Collective, located in Buffalo, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Spiro Collective helps people weave holistic health practices seamlessly into their day. I offer Āyurvedic Health Counseling, private and group Yoga classes, as well as holistic health programs and workshops. I work primarily with women in their 30s and 40s as they navigate fertility, women's health issues, energy, digestion, and hair and skin health.
Tell us about yourself
The start of my business was when I was at UNC Chapel Hill, studying for my Ph.D. in Nutrition. I had thought that Western nutrition and medicine had the answer to vibrant health, but during my studies, I realized there was powerful wisdom from ancient healing traditions like Āyurveda and Yoga that had been overlooked in modern nutrition and medicine. It led me on a quest to integrate my knowledge of Eastern and Western nutrition and psychology, as well as Yoga and Eastern philosophy, to support others in living healthy, confident, joy-filled lives. I am motivated each day by the trust I have in the ancient traditions of Āyurveda and the ways that this practice invites not just better health but also a calmer, more confident mind.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Some of my biggest accomplishments come from the things I've said no to or walked away from. At one point, I had an Āyurvedic snack business that was sold in over 40 retail locations, including Whole Foods. But I realized that running that business took me away from my true mission of supporting people through consultations, programs, and workshops. Closing that arm of my business down was an important turning point.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Saying no or walking away from opportunities. There are so many ideas and avenues to follow, and everyone has an opinion about what you "should" do with your business. Tuning into my own voice and mission is difficult but always feels great.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Don't neglect self-care as you build your business. Be clear about YOUR mission (not someone else's). Be willing to experiment and iterate.
