Empower Families to Home Educate Students - SPED Homeschool
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Peggy Ployhar, Founder, and CEO of SPED Homeschool, located in League City, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
SPED Homeschool is a 501.c.3 nonprofit that empowers families to home educate unique learners by working as a centralized hub where parents can come to find relevant training, quality resources, and an understanding community.
Tell us about yourself
I left a lucrative career in the medical device industry to teach my own struggling learners after my oldest son was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome at the age of 5. I then founded SPED Homeschool in 2017 after working for over a decade as a special needs homeschooling consultant while still homeschooling my own kids. SPED Homeschool now empowers thousands of families across the globe each year to teach their struggling learners at home. As for what motivates me, it is the stories I hear daily from our community on how our resources and encouragement are making a difference in their children's lives and how kids who were once defeated by the learning process are now thriving as they learn at home.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I feel my biggest accomplishment is that I have created a loving and caring community where families can find hope and renewal as they learn to embrace and celebrate the unique way their children learn and eventually will make the largest impact in their community and the world as they discover these unique qualities about themselves and learn to use them with confidence.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Staying focused on what is most important. This can only happen if you keep your mission statement always before you, have a board and/or team that corrects you if you get off track, and don't compare your progress or processes with other businesses.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a large WHY because you are going to need that many days to keep going because running a business, especially a nonprofit, is hard.
- Collaborate with anyone willing to work with you, even if they seem at first they are your biggest competition. These relationships will prove invaluable, and many will grow to be your best business allies.
- Hire a team that grasps your vision and shares your passion. You can always train someone on a new skill, but passion comes from within, and a team who shares your passion will stick it out and work just as hard as you to see problems solved and new heights reached.
