Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lori Robertson, Founder of SpeakHer Coach, located in Nixa, MO, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help professional women craft signature talks they can share confidently and with passion to leverage public speaking to grow their business and personal brand.
Tell us about yourself
I've spent 20 years in the world of live events. For 10 years, I produced a large-scale women's tour called Women of Faith. We toured 28-30 cities each year, visiting NBA and NHL arenas with an average attendance of 14,000 at our peak. I booked and coached the talent, led production, and then stepped onto the stage to emcee the events. Since then, I've consulted, produced, and emceed other live and digital events.
For the last 3 years, I've shifted my focus from the people in the seats to the people on the stages — women and men who have the incredible opportunity to share the core of who they are (their experiences, lessons, and expertise) to help every person in front of them. A 360-degree win. Today, I'm on a mission to help as many women as I can to recognize the magic inside, craft and refine her message and get it to the people it's meant for. A gift for them. And a gift for her as she steps into her unique purpose while growing her career, business, and personal brand along the way.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Truly, for 2 years, SpeakHer Coach was an expensive hobby. But in the third year, I hit a tipping point of actually making money. Now, I'm on a solid path to making 6 figures from speaking and coaching in 2023.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
How stinkin' slowly progress and traction comes. It's hard to understand how patient and consistent you'll have to be—and for how long—until the seeds you've planted start to flower. There's no magic pill, cheat code, or shortcut I've found. The only magic is in consistently showing up, sharing, and serving even when you're sure no one is listening.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start. Start sharing your wisdom, expertise, and story with the world. Don't wait to be picked. Pick your own damn self and go.
- Focus on helping. There's always a seat at the table when you show up to serve.
- Charge as soon as you can. And increase your prices more aggressively than you want to once you've proven your service/product. Get a coach or mentor who can help with both. What you get paid is far more up to you than you want to think it is.
