You're Not Alone in Your Job Search - Spark Resumes

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alicia Mitchell, Founder of Spark Resumes, located in Lithonia, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I provide resume writing services to early and mid-career job seekers who are ready for a change. The goal of a resume is to land an interview that leads to a job offer and I help my clients show that they are well qualified for roles. My services include free resume review, cover letter writing, and LinkedIn profile optimization.

Tell us about yourself

I initially started while working as a quality assurance analyst for a healthcare technology start-up. One of my co-workers was very unhappy with the high-production environment she was working in and wanted a way out. I revamped her resume, and in less than one week, she landed 3 interviews in her dream field. After each interview, she received job offers. I am motivated every day by getting results for clients. One of my most recent clients received an interview request within hours of submitting their resume. I enjoy helping people demonstrate the value they will bring to a new organization.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Moving from 0 to 1 is a huge accomplishment. Many people are not able to move towards their goals to fear or thinking about the 'what-ifs.' To further invest in myself and my clients, I earned the Certified Professional Resume Writer credential awarded by the Professional Associate of Resume Writers and Career Coaches.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I strive to manage client expectations while also preserving my boundaries. In my email signature, I include information about my office hours and how I will reply to emails within those hours.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your why: Some days, it may be difficult to keep going. When you reflect on why you are pursuing your goal, it can be a source of inspiration.
  2. Invest in yourself: There are countless opportunities to grow and develop to best serve your clients.
  3. Establish personal and professional boundaries: Setting expectations can reduce frustrations from clients while also remembering to take time for yourself.
