Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Felicia Brown, Owner of Spalutions, Inc., located in Greensboro, NC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a multi-faceted entrepreneur with a variety of interests and clients. As a Massage and Spa Industry Expert and Business Coach, I work with massage, spa, and wellness professionals. This can range from students just starting their careers to new and veteran solo practice owners, spa managers, and owners. As a speaker, I work with national and international conferences interested in providing inspiring, heart-centered content to improve attendees' business, marketing, self-care, and self-empowerment knowledge. As an author, I write for all of these groups and will soon be releasing two children's books featuring The Dream Team Ducks™ - perfect for kids of all ages and rubber duck lovers.
Tell us about yourself
I've been a massage therapist since 1994 and joined that profession to offer people options for their pain management and wellness while being able to live authentically myself. I quickly became successful and started my first brick-and-mortar business in 1996 to provide a place for other professionals to grow and flourish. Since then, I've owned and managed four spas while also working as an educator, coach, author, speaker, and industry expert. I love helping people succeed and also continuing to learn and grow personally and professionally.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
While it's tempting to say selling my first spa for a large six-figure sum, I think it is a bigger accomplishment to have overcome the bankruptcy I experienced after the 2008 recession. I learned so much from that experience and later started another spa which reflected that growth as well as my passion for the massage and wellness industry.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
As I did, I see a lot of my coaching clients struggle to be good mentors and leaders rather than just owners focused on the bottom line. Once I realized my team was more motivated by feeling connected and included with the mission and business than just about anything else, it changed the way I spend my time in the business and how I communicate.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Stay connected to what you are passionate about in your business. If there is no passion, find another business.
- Set goals that will excite you and keep you motivated.
- Take action regularly which is directly tied to your goals and passion.
