Meet Your Healthcare Needs - South Charlotte Nutrition

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Emily Hirsch, owner of South Charlotte Nutrition, located in Charlotte, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

South Charlotte Nutrition provides a variety of nutrition services, including nutrition counseling, medical nutrition therapy, and corporate wellness events. My business also includes health and wellness content for companies in the food, beverage, and supplement industries, in addition to creating continuing education courses for health care professionals.

Tell us about yourself

I started my career at a huge hospital center in New York City. While I gained a great deal of clinical experience in my role as a clinical dietitian, I knew that by the time I was seeing patients in a hospital setting, I was limited in how I could help them. I began to focus my career in outpatient counseling, where I saw a real change in people's perception of food and, ultimately, their perception of themselves.

The work I do at South Charlotte Nutrition is transformational. I help people reach their goals, alleviate GI symptoms, and help them heal in ways they never thought possible. Additionally, as a health and wellness writer, I frequently comb through the latest research, which I find very rewarding. My work as a writer has enabled me to bring my clients the latest research in the field of nutrition, furthering their success.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Nothing is more rewarding than helping people improve the quality of their lives. My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been watching my clients thrive. There is no greater feeling than hearing people tell you that you've changed their lives for the better. Additionally, I am proud of the evidence-based health and wellness content I've created through the years. Leveraging the latest research and then translating that research into useful information for consumers has been particularly gratifying.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I'm a highly organized person, but becoming a business person has forced me to become that much more organized. One of the hardest things about running a business is having the right systems in place to help things run smoothly.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I think one of the most important things to consider when starting a business is first finding something you're passionate about. Your time on this earth is limited, so I think it's crucial to dive into something that brings you joy and purpose. Once you have an idea, you may be tempted to get caught up in some of the details of your business. For example, hemming and hawing over a logo can stall your progress. Try to forge ahead even if things don't look perfect. Lastly, don't be afraid to ask for help. Partner with people in your community and continuously bounce ideas off of them. Having the support of other business owners and mentors will help you thrive.
