Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in arts and crafts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mehmet Ersoy, Owner of Sound Wave Picture LLC., located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We turn sounds into art that you can hang on your wall and listen to. Whether it's a song, voicemail, a message, wedding vows, baby heartbeats, or anything in between, we turn it into a soundwave and print it. The best part is that you can scan the soundwave itself directly to hear what the soundwave has to say. We have customers from every age and social status. People who are looking for an uncommon gift can get one from us to surprise their beloved ones. You'll get amazing reactions when the gift recipient scans the soundwave; that's our guarantee. Our product is a good gift idea for Christmas, anniversaries, and birthdays.

Tell us about yourself

I was trying to find a unique gift idea for our anniversary which led me to turn our wedding vows into a soundwave. And then I thought it would be nice to be able to scan the soundwave itself. Those were the starting points for me, and the customer feedback and the reactions of the gift recipients kept us working on our business to this day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment would be being able to create an app that can actually scan the soundwaves.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is that there'll be a specific problem every day, and there's no one else to ask for help. You are just on your own to figure out a way and solve that problem. That's an everyday challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You don't have to be passionate about an idea but you gotta believe it will work out before you start.
  2. Once you start, don't give up until you try everything to get that going. There has to be a way to work it out if you believe in your idea.
  3. Start allocating tasks on time. Not too early, not too late. If you hire and start allocating tasks too early, it wouldn't work out because no one else will care about the business as much as you do. If you do it too late, you'll miss out on a lot of opportunities that you should be looking into as a founder while focusing on day-to-day operations
