Elevate Your Career - SoulWork & Six Figures
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in career development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephanie Heath, Founder of SoulWork & Six Figures, located in New York, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
SoulWork is an online service-based business that helps soft-spoken job seekers gain confidence and land soul-aligned offer packages with competitive mission-driven companies. We do that through talking through work trauma, limiting self-belief, mock interview prep, and offering negotiation support. We have a team of three coaches who all identify as soft-spoken and/or introverted, me, Allie Berry, our certified Healing Arts Practitioner, and Cheryl Zalieckas, a Communications and Leadership Strategist.
Tell us about yourself
I decided to create SoulWork and Six Figures after I left my last corporate role. In the past, I functioned as Head of Recruitment for tech startups and as a tech/finance recruiter for companies like Amazon and Sony and most Investment Banks in the US. I've always wanted to not only develop my own self-esteem but also help others do the same. People that felt unseen or had issues with speaking up. I invested in a business program and launched SoulWork & Selfies.
However, I realized that I needed to really step into my own self-worth first before trying to help others attain it. That is when my sister suggested I instead use my skills as a recruiter to help soft-spoken professionals like me interview for their dream companies, get the role, develop confidence at the same time and negotiate a high six-figure salary as well. It's been an incredibly rewarding journey. I've had difficult moments; for example, the first two to three years were very challenging, but I feel infinitely fulfilled in this role now and want nothing more than to grow our team and help more clients in a more efficient way. I never thought I would be a business owner, but I am so glad we are here.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Having a team of happy employees that do not feel stressed out in their roles. They can take time off when they need it. They often receive raises and know that their mental health and family will always come before anything we are working on here. That is truly what I am most proud of.
I remember how scared I was when I worked in corporate. I never really felt like I could be myself. I was afraid of making mistakes. I am incredibly proud that my team knows how to do their job, I don't have to babysit them, and even if they handle something slower than I would have wanted it, it still gets done, and I don't have to use negative reinforcement if that makes sense. Lastly, they all have their own goals, and they often share how grateful they feel to have their life take up the most room mentally for them while still getting a steady paycheck and enjoying their role.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I would say there are a few things, personal development (being a better communicator, controlling my emotions), wearing multiple hats at once, and still continuing to do job duties that you may be burned out from doing.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Prioritize your personal development and build a relationship with God. The speed at which your company will grow will be based on who you are as a person.
- Treat what you're building as a business, an actual thing that one day will have staff and 100s of users, etc. When you view it that way, then the journey is more fun, and it becomes a really enlightening, serendipitous marathon vs. some microwaved race.
- The first 2-3 years will be potentially lonely, so please join communities for accountability and mental health and still make time for your loved ones.
- Keep track of your analytics (what's working and what's not) from the very beginning. It will all be throwing soup at the wall until you start making close to six figures etc. That's when you can predict things, start doubling down on what's working, and explode from there. <3
