All Things Natural - Soothing Remedies

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Denise Lawrence, Owner of Soothing Remedies, located in West Palm Beach, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Soothing Remedies uses naturally derived and organic ingredients to make a line of bath and body products and home fragrances. Our customers are men and women who prefer cruelty-free and plant-based products over synthetic, chemical-based ones.

Tell us about yourself

I have a passion for all things natural and started making soaps using organic, plant-based ingredients as an alternative to the commercial brands that affected my son's sensitive skin. I fine-tuned my recipes, increased my variety, and started giving them as gifts to friends and family. Eventually, I branched out to candle making and subsequently started Soothing Remedies with a commitment to using quality, organic ingredients to create premium products I love and feel confident using daily. We use naturally derived and organic ingredients to manufacture our soaps and candles. Our products are free of parabens, phthalates, and sodium lauryl sulfate and are made in small batches for premium quality. As part of our commitment to our community, we donate a bar of soap to someone in need through our nonprofit partners for each item sold.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment has been expanding my line and having my products sold by independent retailers across the country.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Decision-making has been one of the hardest things for me. As the sole business owner, I have to make decisions about my product line, packaging, branding, marketing, pricing, etc., and it can sometimes become overwhelming.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stay true to yourself because it is so easy to look at what others are doing and try to make impulse changes that might not turn out to be in your best interest.
  2. Lean on people who are good at what they do to help you with the things you are not good at as your business grows.
  3. Find an accountability partner to help you achieve your goals.
