Spiritual and Philosophical Aspects of Yoga - Solstice Yoga
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Clair Thomas, Co-Owner of Solstice Yoga, located in Las Vegas, NV, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I co-own Solstice Yoga - a yoga school in Las Vegas that offers yoga teacher training and continuing education for the ever-curious practitioner and student of any level desiring to enhance their journey to mindfulness and holistic wellness.
Tell us about yourself
During my yoga teacher training, I was floored when I learned about the eating habits of other cultures and how what I'd been taught was wrong was sacred to some while other things I'd been taught to revere were looked poorly upon in other cultures. I was infuriated that I'd spent my life unaware of how much I didn't know about food - and I wondered what else that was true for. Once I learned it was also true for religion and spiritual beliefs and practices that I'd learned, I began finding the commonalities in religions. It was through yoga that I first learned that we could all practice the eight limbs no matter what our religious background, and it motivated me to share the spiritual and philosophical aspects of yoga so more people could connect with the intrinsic good within all of us and find ease and joy in life through self-acceptance and accepting others.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The biggest accomplishment is our yoga school. I am proud of the curriculum and resources we created and the teachers that have graduated from our program.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
It is a challenge going the road alone. As an employee, you are able to complete one task or set of tasks really well. As a business owner, you are responsible for it all - including managing yourself and your schedule. It takes really great intention and discipline to find the balance between work and rest, to ask for help, and to admit that there are some tasks that you will be bad at.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get really comfortable with failing forward. Try something, do it poorly, fail, and learn from it to find the best system that succeeds.
- Learn to snuggle up with patience. Nothing in business ownership happens quickly. There is always more to learn and apply. So, prepare to give success time.
- Be willing to ask for help. Get a virtual assistant as soon as you can and learn the art of delegation. The sooner you learn how to trust yourself to teach others to do it with your systems, the sooner you will have said systems in place.
