Yoga, Community, Wellness - Solstice Yoga

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Adriana Lee, Co-Owner of Solstice Yoga, located in Las Vegas, NV, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I co-own Solstice Yoga with two amazing women, Samantha Okumura and Clair Thomas. We lead yoga teacher training, yoga events, and a virtual yoga studio. We value diversity and inclusivity, so we're lucky to work primarily with women, and some men, from all walks of life.

Tell us about yourself

I've been teaching yoga for almost ten years. The first yoga teacher training I attended really changed my life, but it also made me realize that I wanted to be in training all the time. At first, I took lots of training, learning more and expanding every time. But then, five years ago, I teamed up with Clair and Sam, and we started offering a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training program. Last year we introduced our 300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training program. Now I really do get to live in training all the time!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest personal accomplishment has been writing a book. It was published last year, September 2022, and it's called Yoga for Flexibility: Poses and Practices for Improving Full-Body Mobility Over Time. It's an inclusive guide to gaining and keeping mobility that's geared toward beginners - but I've had feedback from experienced yoga teachers who expressed that even they learned a lot from the book! I've wanted to write a book since I was a teenager, so this was a huge bucket-list accomplishment for me.

My biggest accomplishment in my business, Solstice Yoga, has been watching our training graduates go out into the world and teach. Our grads teach public classes, private sessions, and events all over the Las Vegas Valley. It's something I celebrate because, after my first training, I went home and jumped right into another one because I felt so ill-prepared to teach. I'm happy we've created a program that prepares our students to start teaching right away.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, the hardest part about being a business owner is accountability. Luckily I have two incredible business partners to share the work with. They keep me inspired and fresh - and accountable!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start! They say the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, and the second best time is right now. You don't have to have all of the answers right away. You don't need perfect branding - in fact, both my yoga school and my personal brand have been through major rebrands since we started.
  2. Remember that done is better than perfect. Imperfect action is always better than a perfect idea. You have to just go for it and put something out there. You're meant to evolve over time. As a content creator, I cringe at some of my very first videos. But I'm glad I didn't overthink it and stop myself from putting content out there.
  3. Set small goals for yourself and when things get difficult, remember why you started in the first place. Success has to be measured. If you're trying to get healthy, it's important to take measurements, get blood work done, or take before photos so that you can measure your progress over time. The same thing goes for your business. Write down your starting point and consistently measure your progress. Celebrate the little wins to help you stay on track toward reaching your goals.
