What's your background and motivation to get into the solopreneur life?
I've been running online businesses for 15+ years. Started running my first online business straight out of school and never had a job working for anyone else.
I love creating clever solutions and building amazing teams, it's both the reward of that feeling when you get a great product out of the door and start to see it grow, along with seeing people in your team develop professionally that drives me as an entrepreneur.
As an entrepreneur, what does success ultimately mean to you?
Success = Freedom
What are the top three tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a business today?
1. Do NOT mess around.
Knuckle down, bring your idea to life whilst keeping procrastination to a minimum. Perfectionism can kill a business too. A product or service doesn't need to be perfect to start delivering results, you can always make it better later. Ultimately, get to work and make it happen.
2. Perseverance is ABSOLUTELY key
Too many people want results instantly - ultimately it doesn’t always work like that. Doesn’t matter if you are growing an audience on social, or ranking a website - you need to stick at things to make them happen. Once something starts working - stick at it, nurture it, try and not get distracted.
3. ALWAYS be single minded
If you spend all your time worrying about people and what others think, then you will fail. Competitors are always going to exist so don't get too caught up with what they are doing - keep focused on what you are good at, plus remember competition isn’t a bad thing - it just proves a market exists.
If there was one thing you could do repeatedly day in day out to help grow your business then what would it be?
Easy... Marketing.
What are some of the things you put in place to maintain a healthy work/life balance and to keep it all together?
Take vacations, don't stress that you need to work all hours. Work smarter - not harder, plus build a team and processes that you can trust - so when you're away or not working, the ship doesn't sink.
Who are some of your favorite entrepreneurs and why?
Richard Branson was always inspiring when I was growing up. I learnt a lot about marketing in my 20s from a guy called Frank Kern. In terms of books, here are three that were inspirational in my early years running online companies:
For anyone looking to start a business today, what would be the number one bit of advice you'd give them?
