Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sara Scherbakov-Coutts, founder of Solace with Sara, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business and what I feel called to do is to help clients take control of their health and live their most vibrant lives. I guide and support clients on their healing journey, addressing various symptoms and health challenges like gut imbalances, digestive issues, adrenal fatigue, hormonal imbalances, chronic fatigue, and anxiety, just to name a few.

I believe that everyone can live to their highest potential if their health is optimized. I believe we can achieve optimal health through natural means. I utilize nutrition, herbs, supplements, blood work, testing, and detailed protocols to help my clients achieve their desired goals.

Tell us about yourself

I've always had a natural curiosity about how the mind and bodywork and how to best support ourselves through life. I studied Psychology and received a Bachelor's from Simon Fraser University, then went on to study Holistic Nutrition at the Institute of Holistic Nutrition, graduating with First Class Honors. I opened my private practice at Inspirit Health Group in the heart of Downtown Vancouver, B.C., the following year.

I'm motivated every time I speak with a client. Hearing their unique story and how their health is holding them back from achieving their goals motivates me to keep doing what I do. I wish for everyone to have the most optimal health possible, and to be the one that helps them get there is an incredibly rewarding experience.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Opening a private practice at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic certainly came with a unique set of challenges. While it would have been easy to delay starting my business until things had settled down, I felt that through all of the uncertainty, people were being forced to pause and assess their life, especially the state of their health. For that reason, I decided to carry through with my practice launch. I focused on offering virtual sessions to support the clients who were uncomfortable booking in-person sessions.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is balancing your working life and your personal life. When you run your own business, there is what seems to be an infinite list of tasks you can always be working on. You have to stay mindful of how much time and energy you're putting into your work. If you find yourself unable to stop working, schedule time in your workweek to attend to your personal needs and carve out a little downtime.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small. Ask yourself where you want to be, make a list of what needs to happen in order to get there, and then start with the smallest thing on that list. Everyone has to start somewhere!
  2. Connect. Reach out to someone who you aspire to. Make a list of questions to ask them (How did they get to where they are now? What had they wish they had known when they started their journey? etc.)
  3. Ask for help. If you feel stuck, don't be afraid to ask for help. We are strongest in relation to one another and when we build our own communities.
