Live Well, Shine Bright - Soho Acupuncture By Jen Becker
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jen Becker, Founder of Soho Acupuncture By Jen Becker, located in New York, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Soho Acupuncture by Jen Becker is a private Acupuncture practice located in New York City. Soho Acupuncture by Jen Becker has a special focus on treating women's health, including gynecological conditions and fertility and emotional conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression, sleep, and digestive conditions, as well as pain relief.
We are committed to treating the whole human being, rather than just symptoms or one aspect of a person. Our goal as practitioners is to guide patients to newfound and newly felt holistic wellness through acupuncture and Chinese medicine practices to inform, inspire and help our patients take mindful actions, find balance, and reach their wellness goals.
Tell us about yourself
I am a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist and the founder and owner of Soho Acupuncture By Jen Becker. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago in Kinesiology. Studying the human body inspired a search for health and wellness that went beyond the Western perspective and led me to pursue my Master's degree in Chinese Medicine at the Pacific College of Health and Science and ultimately ignited her path to healing.
It was during those four years of rigorous study working towards my Master's that my adventurous nature led me to all three campuses of her acupuncture school—in Chicago, California, and lastly, in New York, where I reside today. I have additional training in Five Element Acupuncture and pulse diagnosis. Also, I completed a two-year post-graduate clinical integration mentorship learning The Inner Tradition of Five Element Acupuncture and Advanced Pulse Diagnosis with distinguished Five Element Practitioner, author, and teacher, Lonny Jarrett. Immediately after graduating from Pacific College of Health and Science and receiving my acupuncture license, I started work at a fast-paced community acupuncture clinic in Brooklyn.
There, I honed my skills as a healer for 4 years, treating a wide array of health conditions and over 100 patients a week, all while building my private practice in Soho, which has now developed over the past 10 years into a thriving practice: Soho Acupuncture by Jen Becker. In addition to acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, I have a passion for nutrition and the use of food as medicine. I created the wellness blog - Shine Soul Bright to share my love and knowledge of holistic health, lifestyle, and beauty practices. I am passionate about guiding others in their journey to healing and feel fortunate to practice Chinese medicine, with its deep and ancient history, beautiful philosophy, and integration of the ebb and flow of nature with the human body.
Witnessing our patients heal, learn about their bodies from an eastern perspective, and empowering them to make more healthful choices and understand themselves better is what motivates me each day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Having a thriving acupuncture practice in New York City for the past 11 years.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I would say the pandemic has been the hardest thing I've dealt with as a small business owner; we had to close down for a while in 2020. There was a lot of uncertainty and financial hardships over the past few years. But we stayed the course, rode the waves, and made it through!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't give up! Keep going; the beginning is hard but stays the course. It's so worth it in the long run.
- Don't be afraid to delegate out work to others to lighten your workload; it's easy to want to do everything yourself when it's your business (your baby), but you can't do it all yourself. You don't want to burn out; the business needs you feeling your best so you can stay clear, creative, and organized.
- Find the right people to help you with things that are not your strengths. Having a team of solid people you can reach out to for help with marketing, SEO, web design, or whatever it may be will help you immensely.
