Making Media Social - Social90

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Luis Evitt, Founder of Social90, located in Birmingham, West Midlands, UK.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hi, I have multiple businesses that interlink.

  • Social90 (My main business) - We are a digital media marketing agency, with the core of our company being founded on data-driven results. Our customers range from businesses turning over nine figures to startups who are at the beginning of their journey.
  • Midas Ventures - This is my private residential development business that I have recently set up. This will mainly act as a vessel to invest in the future, but currently, we have acquired several properties which have been refurbed and rented to clients.
  • RoofLight Solutions - This was my first business, and it specializes in architectural glazing and building supplies. This was the business that gave me the capital to take part in other ventures.
  • Elemento VC - A business currently I still am developing with my business partner. It is based in NYC and is a different take on the conventional VC model, empowering startups to connect with investors directly for more disruptive projects.
  • Born Ambitious Podcast - An extension of Social90, this is a podcast that is not monetized, and we have created it to help people who want to dip their toes into the world of entrepreneurship or start their own businesses! Check it out on YouTube!

Tell us about yourself

From a very young age, I have always been interested in entrepreneurship. I think this stems from my mum and dad, who came from nothing to become successful by running their own businesses. This really has always inspired me.

I never wanted to follow the normal educational route. At 15, I moved away to play professional rugby, where I learned a lot about being independent. At 18, I got a really bad injury which meant I had to stop playing. I started up my first business, a drop-shipping building supply, which enabled me to develop the learning and enough funds to start up my marketing agency.

What motivates me every day is being my own boss. Being able to wake up every day and do what I want, when I want, and with who I want. I genuinely love my job and the clients I have. The opportunities for travel and networking that it has offered me are outstanding. The meaning of life is enjoying the passing of time, and how can you do that if you don’t enjoy how you are spending the most amount of your time (working)?

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Genuinely developing my business to the stage, it is at now, whereas as a marketing company, we don’t market ourselves. All our clientele comes through word of mouth and recommendations. I believe this is a big achievement as the most important thing to me is delivering a second to non and genuine, authentic service.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Sometimes you have to cut people out of your life, and the only way you realize that is the hard way. I’ve been grinding with my marketing agency for the last five years now and have met some people who dragged me down, not elevated me or my business. Sometimes it’s hard to omit those people from your life due to the fear of the unknown.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. START. Sounds dumb, but you’ll never know unless you know. Don’t be one of those people who think to themselves, “I wish I did that sooner” There are Some things about running your own business I can guarantee. Things will go wrong. You will make mistakes. You are gonna have some pretty bad days. But you won’t ever appreciate when things go right unless you give it a shot in the first place. If it was easy, everyone would do it.
  2. Surround yourself with the right people, and do not waste time on people who bring you down, are jealous, or criticize you. Surround yourself with people who support you and want to see you succeed. I am where I am today because of my good friends and family. P.S the more successful you become, the more people who want to be your “friend” don’t forget where you came from.
  3. Have several avenues of income. It’s such a traditional mentality to think you have to focus on one business alone. Don’t be afraid to have several businesses while not spreading yourself too thin. Passion needs capital, and sometimes the businesses that are not attractive are the ones that make money and give you the capital to invest in what you really love.
  4. BONUS TIP: It’s ok to make mistakes. Fail fast; I’ve made some monumental f*ck ups, and it’s going to happen. Just learn and make sure it doesn’t happen again!
