What's your business and who are your customers?
We're a Social Media agency focusing on consulting and mass education via our YouTube channel.
Tell us about yourself
My partner and I always knew we'd work for ourselves, so after one of our projects wrapped up in 2014, we decided that was the time to move. We started it as a side hustle and in July 2015, we went full-time with it.
We started off doing Done For You services exclusively, but in late 2018 we launched our YouTube channel where we give strategies, tips and tricks. We love being in control of our schedule, of who we work with and what we do. We love delivering genuine value to our clients and audience, and the move to education and consulting has been more rewarding than we ever imagined.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We landed Facebook (now Meta) as a client last summer, as a two-person agency. We were pretty stoked with that, there's really no bigger client we could land so the move to education feels right.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Trying to juggle all the tasks and do them yourself, especially while funds are low.
We finally hired our first full-time employee in 2020, and our second this year, and we also onboarded our accountants to do our bookkeeping for us last month. We were so used to having to do it all ourselves that we didn't know any other way, so letting go and delegating has been a difficult but rewarding experience.
What are the top 3 tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
1. Make sure you have a solid runway of funds to keep you going if things get lean - because they will.
2. Trust your gut. Always. We betrayed our gut feelings multiple times and it never ended well.
3. Deliver more value than you're paid for. Most people don't actually care, so if you step up, do the work well and overdeliver, you'll stand out quickly.
