Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sindy Anderson, Owner of Soapary, located in Conyers, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I make Gourmet Goat Milk Soaps, Lotions & Scrubs, Along with Adorable Bath Bombs, Candles, and other Bath & Body Specialty Products.
Tell us about yourself
I'm an Artist at heart. I love to make Artisan Gourmet Goat Milk Soaps fragranced with lovely scents for everyone in the family. I started when my youngest had Eczema, as most people did in this industry. Did a good bit of research to help her with her skin issues. Friends & Family started using my products, and as the saying goes: They told two people, and they told two people, and so on and so on till my business was born. We are now branching out into the wholesale market. Updating our packing and hiring a salesperson!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think building out my store most likely and the store being successful. . My daughter and I did most of the work along with my kids and husband on the weekends. Demo and a rebuild in less than a month!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Paperwork. I HATE all the paperwork. The Gov't strangles small businesses in paperwork. I'd much rather be creating than doing the financial end of the business. You're always looking at the bottom line and hoping you can price your products, so they're affordable to all. Stay-at-home moms, as well as the working mother and single moms, love to purchase nice products as well, but they need to be affordable so they can still meet their families' needs.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Sweat Equity.
- Savings - Not Loans or Credit Cards~ try to keep everything on a cash basis.
- Buy smart ~ Realize what you can afford to do now and what you can live without. Your shop/business is an ever-growing project. You can't go in with all the bell & whistles at once. Start slow and build. It's actually more fun that way, and you don't have the headaches and the worry. All you are left with is the enjoyment!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Make quality products, don't try to cut corners, and what is it they say~ buy low and sell high? Be reasonable, be honest, and the customers will recognize the quality and purchase and remain loyal.
