Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Keiron Walker, Co-Founder of Soap So Co., located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We manufacture handcrafted soap and have plans to add a couple more handmade bath and body collections in the future. Our customers tend to be folks who are gifting and people who want to inject a bit more personality and colour into their hygiene routines and homes.

Tell us about yourself

I first got involved with Soap So Co. when my partner Ian started the hobby. He was home from work and needed something to do because he was bored, and I started making batches with him, trying out different techniques, there were a lot of disasters, but mostly good batches! As we watched it slowly grow into an expensive hobby, we also accumulated over 3000 bars of soap.

Ian had to go back away for work and heard an interview on the radio with the owner of a new market opening in town; we applied for it, got accepted, started to conceptualise our display and new retail space, structure our interactions and focus on our core values. By the second weekend of the market, we had sold through the entire inventory we had accumulated! By this point, we knew we were on to something here. To this date, we still serve our community in that same market and hope to continue serving folks for many more years to come.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We’ve just surpassed our 200th retail partner milestone, which I just think is pretty rad!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The lack of boundaries I have when it comes to work-life balance. I’m working on it!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Keep it real. People and clients can smell bullshit from a mile away.
  2. Have fun (lots of it)
  3. Set clear goals and create an action plan on how to attain them.
