Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Krystal Young, owner of Snowberry, located in Erin, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My little business is all about flowers and how they connect people daily. Spreading joy through flowers has become a big part of who we are. Allowing people to discover their love for old favourites and exciting new Florals that they have never seen before. We love to promote our local Floral growers, which really helps people realize what grows in our neighborhood all summer long.

Tell us about yourself

I've always loved people, finding ways to make them feel happy and part of a community. I have a hospitality background and lots of retail and design experience. Together combined, I feel that it was a natural progression to add my love florals to the mix and begin a business that plays off all of the above.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The relationships that I have with my customers are past and present.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time management. People assume that because we are the owner of the business that, you have more free time. If anything, I find myself struggling with balancing personal time and business time. I work way more hours than ever before.

With a small business, we are often the accountant, receptionist, merchandiser, web designer, delivery driver, etc. All the roles. It can be hard to find a balance, but it's worth it in the end.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Realize that behind any small business is a human being. Knowing that before you become a small business run by you, the human is hugely important.
  2. Be patient. It takes time to become established. Most businesses aren't successful overnight, and you will need to give yourself time to grow in the direction that you were hoping to grow.
  3. Take risks! It's scary but often, feeling uncomfortable or outside of our comfort zone is a good sign.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

The face behind the brand is important. People tend to love supporting businesses run by people they adore. A little bit of personal connection goes a long way with customers/clients.
