What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Focusologist, international speaker, and trainer. I work with entrepreneurs, business leaders, managers, and teams to quickly find the most important drivers of their success and develop the best strategy to get there. I do this through speaking, workshops, online courses, books, and apps.

Tell us about yourself

I started out in technology. I loved automating processes to give you more time for the important work. You can get more work done in less time. That was the initial motivation, but I learned that productivity isn't the point; it's achieving meaningful outcomes that matter most. Meaningful outcomes go beyond profit; they can be deeper relationships, supporting those in need, solving a problem, or taking care of your family. It motivates me to know that my work helps us to think, act and be more strategic or purposeful in everything we do. I teach people thinking and operational strategies to reach their goals more efficiently and effectively.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is building up my IT business from just me to a multi-million dollar business and selling it to a public company. We innovated new products that sold around the world. It was a great pleasure to work with a great team and the self-development we all achieved on the journey.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing facing a business owner is how to stay focused on what is most important and help the company stay focused on what is most important. There are many distractors, and sometimes it is hard to hear the signal through all the noise.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Differentiation is everything; this helps you create a competitive advantage and stay focused on what is most important to your business and your customers; it helps the team have clear priorities.
  2. Trust your team. Trusting your team to do their best give them the flexibility to try new things and take ownership of the work and coach them as they grow. Trust is the basis of a productive environment. As a leader, you may feel like you don't have control and you distribute the responsibility, but actually, this is how a leader maintains control by developing other leaders.
  3. Challenge the status quo. Challenge your team to constantly look at how you are delivering and operating and find better, faster, or more innovative ways of accomplishing the goal.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

The most important thing is to constantly step back and re-evaluate where you are and reset priorities often.
