Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mandi White-Ajmani, Owner of Small Brooklyn Psychology, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Small Brooklyn Psychology is a group psychology practice that offers evidence-based therapy and neuropsychological assessment. We help people understand their strengths and weaknesses deep and integratively and then use that information to treat psychological issues. We work with people of all ages but have strong expertise in treating toddlers, kids, teens, and parents.

Tell us about yourself

I began Small Brooklyn Psychology as a solo neuropsychological assessment practice in 2013. I had recently left a career in academic research. I loved how assessment allowed me to use data to help people understand themselves and their children. Beyond the clinical work, I also came to love the entrepreneurship that accompanies creating a successful practice.

I was able to draw upon my MBA as well. After a few years, I grew the business into a group and now have ten employees. Over time, I've come to love the various roles I play. I love that I've created a work environment for my team where people feel stable and valued. I love that I provide high-quality expertise that helps people. And I love that I get to interact with so many brilliant and driven people.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm proud to have built a business that provides a good salary and a welcoming work environment for multiple people. This business supports numerous families and is stable enough that these families can count on it-- that feels amazing.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Uncertainty is consistently tricky-- the pandemic was brutal and trying to predict the economy is stressful. But accepting fate is a necessary part of building a business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Recognize that you won't be able to predict and account for all possible problems ahead of time. Trust that you can solve problems as they arise.
  2. Take the time to define what you want the business to be. We all know what we want, but putting it in words is a helpful exercise one can draw on later.
  3. Everyone makes bad decisions sometimes. Know when to walk away from a wrong decision as a sunk cost, learn from it, and move on. Don't continue to make business decisions based on trying to salvage the wrong decision.
