Bedtime Story - Sleep for Kids

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elaine Martin, Founder of Sleep for Kids Pty, Ltd., located in Brookfield, QLD, AU.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run two businesses. MindOverMatter is a psychotherapy practice that specializes in helping clients of all ages with anxiety, fear, and kids issues. Sleep for Kids is a kids' bedtime story app to help kids of all ages to sleep.

Within the app, my key customers are the parents and caregivers. 25-45 Anyone with an emotional problem that they want to overcome can use MindOverMatter.

Tell us about yourself

I am a qualified psychotherapist, writer, YouTuber, app creator, and mom. After a successful career in human resources, I embarked on a new challenge, and after completing studies in psychotherapy, I started my business, MindOverMatter, in 2009. The business grew steadily over the years and helping my clients overcome anxiety and fear became my main specialty.

I also found that more and more children were presenting at the clinic with all sorts of emotional issues. It was clear that a different approach was needed when dealing with kids and that creating personalized stories with embedded suggestions for change often made a huge difference in helping them overcome their problems.

I created a YouTube channel in 2017 and have around 90 stories and sessions for both adults and kids to help improve mental health and well-being. In 2019, I developed the app Sleep for Kids to support my work in the clinic and also to provide a platform where parents across the world could get help for kids who struggle with sleep. I am passionate about what I do, and I know from the feedback I get that my work on both YouTube and the app helps thousands of people around the world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was continuing to follow my vision regardless of the obstacles. It took three attempts to get the Sleep for Kids app to where it is today, but I am so proud of what I have achieved so far.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Staying motivated and focused, particularly while working on my own. Also, doing whatever needed to be done, any time of the night or day, to keep things moving forward. is a huge commitment, which I still have today.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a very clear vision of where you are going, and then map out how you are going to get there. Review this at least every three months as things change.
  2. Take the time to learn new stuff, but don't waste your time on things you are not good at; become a good delegator and focus on your strengths.
  3. Surround yourself with positive, like-minded people, and use that positive mindset in everything you do.
