Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ellanee Wilson, Founder of Sleep Coach Mom, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is sleep coaching for infants and toddlers. I help tired families get some sleep.
Tell us about yourself
If you had asked me in my 20s if I would be working in the mom world, I would've thought you were crazy. But then I had kids. After being a high school teacher for 10 years, I completely changed paths and became a certified sleep coach because I knew firsthand how vulnerable new motherhood is and how sleep deprivation can really affect a person's mental health. I try my best to make sleep accessible to all and to make it easier to navigate the noise of the internet.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think just taking the leap and starting a business has been my biggest accomplishment. It was a hard decision to make (and a scary one), but it has been worth it. I really have enjoyed meeting new people, connecting with moms, and holding virtual support groups for women (especially during lockdown). I am working on some big projects that I am incredibly excited about and hope to have out in the next couple of months!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I think navigating most of my decisions alone has been difficult. I have my husband, who is a HUGE wealth of knowledge and support, but it really is a different ball game to be the one to make my own calls and choose my own paths. It has helped me strengthen my confidence in ways I never knew I could.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- My biggest piece of advice would be to give yourself grace. This stuff does not get built overnight, and any step forward, however small, is a step. Celebrate your wins and take each setback as a lesson.
- Be willing to embarrass yourself. The first time you do something, it will NOT be perfect. Don't let that stop you from doing it anyway.
- Be authentic. Be who you are. YOU are what makes your business special, and if you take that part away from it, you have nothing new and exciting. Don't be afraid to be who you are, even if it rocks a boat or comes with negativity from others who don't get it.
