Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Spencer, founder of SL/M Nutrition Coaching, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
SL/M Nutrition Coaching is high-quality one-on-one nutrition coaching for weight loss. I focus on helping simplify nutrition so that busy women can get back to feeling confident in reaching their goals without hopping on a crash diet or juice cleanse. The women I work with want healthy nutrition and are done with the yo-yo diets and restrictions. They want to be good role models for the next generation. I am here to guide them to healthy, happy, and whole eating in a custom, high support coaching model.
Tell us about yourself
I started SL/M Nutrition Coaching in the spring of 2017. It was just over a year after my own weight loss journey. I completed my BSc in Nutrition in 2013, but even with all this knowledge, I couldn't crack the code to my own weight loss and kept reluctantly falling prey to diet trends. I felt so ashamed and deflated after every failed attempt and couldn't understand why I couldn't reach my goals when it seemed like others did on these diets. Was it really a lack of motivation and willpower? That's what I thought until I started applying some nutrition knowledge I had from school.
I worked in small sustainable habits, and over time, I reached a very comfortable, confident place with my health and nutrition. After this, I knew I wanted to help women follow the same path I did, sharing that it doesn't have to be impossibly hard to lose weight healthily. My goal is to abolish diet culture and to teach more women how to eat healthily and feel empowered in their nutrition is the way to do it. Each client I work with has a huge impact on their family and communities, which keeps me motivated in the work I do.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Five years in business! It is a long time to stick with one goal, and mine and the business values have stayed true all this time. I'm really proud of the business and community I've created.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Honestly, there are many hard things about running a business, but the benefits outweigh the challenges. There are small things like taxes and paperwork, but I think the hardest is to remain consistent when there are so many new and shiny opportunities out there. Not every opportunity will be good for your business, and you have to really trust your gut.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't do it just for the money. There are going to be very hard days, and if you're only in business to make money, you won't last.
- Don't forget about the money; remember, you are running a business here. To be a business, you need to sell a good or service. Giving away your goods or services without a strong business case will devalue what you offer and hurt your business in the long run.
- Have fun! Enjoy! Meet new people, get a business network, and be flexible with yourself. These are perks of not working for someone else!
